WEEK 3

Monday 30 March 2020

New week, new challenge of staying sane. I biked 4km just to simulate the feeling of travelling to work and I even listened to a podcast during the bike trip, because that’s what I always do in the car to work.

I am starting to realize that we are in this for the long haul. Until now, this whole working from home measure seemed like a temporary solution. I was under the impression that we would be back in office within 2 weeks, 3 at most. Now we’re in week 3 and I don’t think we’ll be returning to life as before in the foreseeable future.

This realization envigorated me and I set up a whole schedule for the week to build in structure for myself. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning and Friday evening I participate in my gym’s live online sports class, Monday and Wednesday evening I exercise by myself, and during the day I will go on at least one walk, either before the day starts or during lunch, or both. Setting up a structure like this anchors me and helps me keep track of the days.

The work day started with a conference call at 8:30. What I like about this call is that we do not need our laptops, so instead of dialing in at my desk, I dial in through my phone and go on a walk. This way I start the day with fresh air and mild exercise, and it really boosted my energy and focus for the rest of the day.

I am totally at ease in this corona situation. The need for social interaction has decreased, I am working productively, I have set a routine for staying fit, and I have embraced the hours we gained by not having to commute by reading books or going on walks while listening to podcasts.
